We need to give support to carers

THE results of two new surveys that have just been announced to mark Carers Week 2009 show the importance of carers and the contribution they make to society is recognised and appreciated by the general public.

The overwhelming majority of those questioned also agreed that the current level of Carers Allowance is unreasonable. However, most of us drastically underestimate the number of people in the UK who are providing unpaid care.

CHASE hospice care for children supports around 300 families living in south west London, Surrey and Sussex with children and teenagers who suffer from life-limiting conditions.

We support these families in any way we are needed, which often involves providing information and advice about welfare benefits and working with each family to ensure access to the healthcare and social services to which they are entitled.

In the new surveys, over a third of carers stated that 'frustration with bureaucracy' pushed them to breaking point. This is why Chase is supporting the campaign to celebrate the contribution that is made by the UK's six million carers, and raise awareness of their needs.
