Airport worker says credit crunch causing fears over jobs

The central argument of MP David Wilshire in support of a third runway - the need to safeguard jobs - has been rejected by a BA worker.

Mr Wilshire cites 70,000 jobs at the airport and thousands more outside that could be at risk if BAA does not get the go-ahead for a third runway.

But a baggage handler from Egham, who wishes to remain anonymous, says workers who live in the area do not agree and are as worried about noise, pollution and traffic as other people in Runnymede and Spelthorne.

He added: "I live locally and I don't want a third runway. We all want to keep our jobs but what about all the noise and pollution? They say it will make the current runways less busy but from my experience they will just put more flights on them.

"We are worried about our jobs but not because there might not be a third runway.

"The worry is that people are cutting back on flying.

"People are confusing fears about the credit crunch and fears about the third runway."

But Mr Wilshire, who wants a 'better not bigger' Heathrow , argued: "The point is there are so many people who work there who are my constituents and they are desperately worried about their jobs." .
