Alert over dud notes

Fears are growing that counterfeit money could be circulating in Egham's shops after a man was discovered trying to use fake £20 notes.

The warning comes from police and shopkeepers after the man attempted to buy some toiletries and a drink, worth about £3, with a suspicious £20 note in Superdrug in the High Street on Monday.

The store manager, working on the till, checked the note and questioned the man, who said he had just withdrawn it from the bank.

But he snatched it back and fled the shop, and the store manager contacted police.

The store's assistant manager said the note was a poor copy and added: "It was possibly the worst fake note I have ever seen. It looked like kids' money, or it had just been photocopied.

It was not even cut straight and didn't have the silver lines. There could be more of them around."

Officers are now reviewing CCTV footage as part of their investigation and the Egham safer neighbourhood team is stepping up patrols in the area.

It has warned shopkeepers and the public to keep watch for the fake notes.

The man who tried to use the note is described as white, in his early 20s, about 6ft tall, with dark hair. He was clean shaven.

Surrey Police have appealed for witness and anyone with information should call 0845 125 2222. .
