An 88-year-old man was found dead after a fire in the home he lived in for more than 60 years.
Widower Jack Webster was found dead by firefighters on the ground floor of his home in Parkland Grove, Ashford, in the early hours of Monday morning.
Neighbours - who described Mr Webster as "one of the great characters" - called firefighters shortly after 2.30am when they smelled smoke in the air.
Crews from Staines and Sunbury took about two hours to put out the blaze, which investigators believe started in the downstairs kitchen or back room. Arson is not suspected.
Jane Spencer, who lives in Parkland Grove, said: "It's tragic. Everyone here is in shock. He was such a friendly man and he used to cycle along waving to everyone - he was so lively for his age."
