Pregnancy service is all grown up at one

STAFF at a pregnancy advice centre are preparing to celebrate its first anniversary at the end of the month.

Options Pregnancy Crisis Centre, in Clarendon Road, Ashford, gives free advice to people who have had an unplanned pregnancy.

The centre is run by volunteers, but in February Claire Pearce, of Chesterfield Road, Ashford, was given a secondment by the Golden

Jubilee Trust where she gets paid by Waitrose to volunteer for six months.

She said: "People need to know we are here. With the economic climate, we are seeing there are a lot of people in the area who are concerned that they can't financially afford having a baby. So we are directing them to any support they can get."

Heather, who has three children, has worked for Waitrose for 25 years, but took up volunteering a few years ago.

She said: "I wanted to get involved so I could help other people. I didn't have any trouble with pregnancy but the phrase we used at our opening was to try and put yourself in someone else's shoes, because no one knows what it is like to be someone else."
