A Surrey police constable has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving over a collision involving a 75-year-old man.

PC John Wright, 39, who is part of North Surrey Targeted Patrol Team based at Esher police station, was charged at Slough police station yesterday afternoon. He will appear at Reading magistrates court on Tuesday 5 May.

The charge relates to an incident on the A244 Esher Road, Hersham, on Tuesday November 4 last year, when PC Wright was at the wheel of a marked Ford Mondeo police car.

He was responding to an emergency call when the car collided with an elderly pedestrian on Esher Road close to Ramornie Close at 6.55pm.

The pedestrian, Archibald McIlveen, 75, from Islington, died at the scene.

PC Wright was suspended from driving following the collision and transferred to a role that does not involve interaction with the public. He has also been moved to a different police station.

With the agreement of the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC), Thames Valley Police investigated the collision and its findings will be heard when during the trial.
