Ashford Hospital specialists' eastern mission

TWO specialists in stroke rehabilitation at Ashford Hospital have been sharing their expertise with a hospital in India's Punjab.

Usha Sagoo, a sister on Ashford's Chaucer ward, and physiotherapist Michelle Green have helped staff at the Apollo Hospital establish a stroke unit.

Their involvement sprang from Ashford consultant physician Dr Bhaskar Mandal, who helped a high-profile patient of the Apollo Hospital after he suffered a stroke. The patient was His Holiness Satguruji, the leader of the Namdhari Sikh Vidyak Jatha.

The hospital is setting up a stroke unit in Satguruji's name and the Trust has been helping. "It will be unique in India," said Dr Mandal.

Sister Sagoo and Mrs Green flew to Delhi on June 20, after a send-off from members of Southall's Namdhari Sikh Temple.

Dr Mandal said: "They will include aspects of educating patients and their carers about stroke, as well as explaining to professional, medical colleagues how and why we do things to achieve the best for patients."
