Matrons to return to St Peter's Hospital wards

TRADITIONAL matrons will be reintroduced to the wards of Ashford and St Peter's Hospitals.

Health campaigner Karin Peluso called for the traditional role to be reinstated, to drive up standards in the two hospitals, following a Freedom of Information Act request by the Herald and News on June 10 (right).

It revealed a list of 'serious untoward incidents' including what she termed 'alarming' infection rates.

The new chief nurse at the hospitals, Caroline Becher, said the story was one of the first she saw when she started the job three weeks ago and she announced last Wednesday that she plans to act on the advice.

She said: "I've not been in the job long but I mean business, and I intend to drive up standards in these hospitals. "I will be reintroducing the traditional matron role, so that all the matrons know exactly what they're doing, so that they monitor the wards, and so that they are instantly recognisable."

Mrs Peluso said: "This is really good news and I think that bringing back the matron will only be good for the hospitals. Of course there is a long way to go but this is a step in the right direction and I think that when people see the matrons and can tell who they are, it will definitely give them more confidence in the hospital."
