Vet offers fireworks advice to pet owners

WITH the fireworks season soon to start in earnest, a Shepperton vet is issuing advice on how best to protect pets.
Jamie Crittall, of the Beech House Veterinary Centre says owners should: Provide a den or hiding place, muffle the sound of fireworks, keep animals inside, don't over-fuss them, stay calm yourself, don't get angry with your pet, and repare for unusual behaviour.
Mr Crittall said: "Our behaviourist can give good advice regarding how to cope during the season - for example how to react yourself and where to prepare a 'den' for your pet to hide in.
"It could also be your pet would benefit from taking something. Some animals may need prescription medications, but there are other options that can be considered.
"Once fireworks season is passed, it's time to think about long-term control of the problem. Fear of fireworks tends to get worse over time and can expand to include fear of other loud noises, such as thunder, if ignored."
