Family stunned by whirlwind decision to start US treatment

Melissa and her family really were taking a trip into the unknown as they departed for America yesterday (Tuesday).

Parents Mark and Lorraine, of Mead Way, Ashford, were only told last week they would be going and, after a whirlwind few days of organising payments, medical documents and time off work, Mark still had no idea where they would stay during the trip.

"I really don't know what we are going to do," he said. "We have booked the first night in a hotel which is costing $230, so a long stay there is completely out of the equation.

"We are going to need something cheap but Melissa will need to rest during her two weeks of pre-treatment planning, so we probably need something more comfortable than a hotel room.

"It's all been so quick. One minute we're still unsure if she's got a place, the next, whoosh, we're off. I'm surviving on adrenalin at the moment, there has been so much to organise and the whole thing is daunting."

Mark plans to return home just before Melissa starts her actual treatment, probably on January 27. Fiancé James is likely to come with him, although mum Lorraine will stay, to be joined at some point by Melissa's sister Katrina.
