Jul 9 2008 Staines News
When the sun shone and the breeze was warm it was time to don your Sunday best and take a stroll by the Thames in Edwardian Staines.
As mentioned a few weeks ago, its riverside location meant huge numbers of trippers descended on the town on high days and holidays, keen to enjoy the sights, show off their latest outfits and perhaps take to the water.
This little group, the ladies in their flowery hats and the gent in his straw boater, are about to be rowed across the river aboard the little Staines ferry. The ferryman is just visible in the middle.
The Pack Horse Hotel on the opposite bank (now The Thames Lodge) was hugely-popular with visitors.
As can be seen, part of it was used a a boathouse in those days.
