Pupils from Kingscroft Junior School, in Staines, received a visit from an author whose work they are studying.
The students met children's writer Jamila Gavin, best known for her books The Magic Orange Tree and Coram Boy, on Tuesday last week.
Jamila spent about an hour talking to the pupils about different styles of writing and how her early personal experiences of living in India inspired many of the characters and themes in her books.
She also signed books for the children and held a question and answer session.
Deputy head teacher Maria Winter said: "Waterstone's bookstore contacted us and arranged with myself for Jamila to come into see us.
"The children study three authors a year, so by secondary school they will have studied 12 authors.
"Jamila Gavin is one of those authors and in year five the children read Grandpa Chatterji. Her multicultural themes work well with our curriculum." .
