EVENING STANDARD TROPHY,SEMI-FINAL Sunbury...........................132 Wimbledon......................131 Sunbury won by one run
Sunbury Cricket Club will celebrate the greatest day in their history at one of the sport's most iconic grounds on September 7.
The Oval, that once witnessed Len Hutton's 364 in England's Test record score of 903-7 against the Aussies in 1938, will host the 2008 Evening Standard Challenge Trophy Final and Sunbury will face Ealing after a last-ball semi-final win over Wimbledon on Sunday.
Skipper Olly-Roland Jones bowled the last over of the match with Wimbledon needing seven for victory. Three runs came off the first two balls and all looked lost when the third delivery was sent towards the boundary.
Charlie Holcombe's full length dive saved what would have been the winning boundary but with only two needed from three balls the odds were still against Sunbury.
A wicket followed from the fourth ball and Wimbledon swung and missed at the penultimate delivery.
One ball left, still two to win and the Oval in touching distance. Roland-Jones produced the perfect delivery which the Wimbledon batsman could only dig out back up the pitch and victory was Sunbury's.
It was great reward for the Kenton Court Meadow side who had valiantly defended a small score of 133 all out. Middlesex youngster Adam London top scored with 35, while there was a cameo of 18 from Seaxes' stalwart David Nash.
Victory marked Sunbury second success in 24 hours over Wimbledon following a 54-run win in their Surrey Championship Premier Division fixture on Saturday.
It was a vital win for Woodcock's side as it guaranteed safety from relegation.
The skipper led the way with 42 and London made a classy 35 as Sunbury totalled 163.
Adam Stanier rammed home the advantage with a season's best 4-28 as the hosts crumbled to 109 all out.
