Ashford cubs retain five-a-side crown

EIGHTH Ashford retained their Spelthorne District Cub Scouts five-a-side tournament title after a nail-biting penalty shoot-out victory over First Charlton on Saturday.

Almost 80 cubs from 13 teams battled it out for the prize, with 103 goals scored in the process.

Former winners Charlton were put to the sword in a tense final, which Ashford eventually edged 4-3 on spot kicks to be crowned winners for the second successive year.

The triumphant team (right) was: Max Frost, Joe Wallbanks, Ben Jeffrey, Callum Payne, Taryn Hadley and Charlie Smith.

Meanwhile, it took another shoot-out lottery to decide the third and fourth places.

Fifth Sunbury pipped group B winners Third Ashford by the odd one in seven to finish in the medals.

It was also a special day for father-and-son duo Steve and Harry Rance.

Dad Steve has refereed the tournament for the past 29 years, and it was Harry's turn to follow in his footsteps as he joined his father with the whistle.
