Sarahs get golden double

ASHFORD'S super sailor Sarah Ayton, who learned her sport at Queen Mary Sailing Club, completed a golden Olympic double in the roughest of seas at Qingdao on Sunday.

Ayton and Sarah Webb, of Weybridge, became only the second British female athletes in history to win back-to-back Olympic gold medals after claiming Yngling class victory with crewmate Pippa Wilson at the Beijing 2008 Sailing Regatta. Having topped the leaderboard going into the medal race by the narrowest of margins, the British trio knew whatever the placings, they had to finish ahead of the Dutch team. Ayton got off to a flying start, but the

Dutch tracked them all the way to the top mark. However, once the Brits rounded the mark ahead, there was no stopping them, and with the Dutch home fifth, gold was theirs. Ayton said: "It has been brilliant and highlights what this campaign has always been about, pure perfection. "We're just an awesome team. We've been looking at getting a good start as something we had to address, and we executed it perfectly today. "It's been an incredibly tough four years for Sarah and myself, and a tough two years for Pippa Wilson too. "Being on top of the world again has made all the struggle and effort so worthwhile."
