Staines schoolboy Jake Knight admits he was a bag of nerves when he walked out at Wembley as an England mascot for this week's World Cup qualifier win over Ukraine.

The Chelsea and Southampton fan was one of 11 youngsters who won a competition won by England team sponsors Nationwide.

And although he the 10-year-old was keeping his fingers crossed to walk out clutching the hand of his hero Wayne Rooney, he had no complaints about walking out with Steven Gerrard.

Mum Lorraine said: "Jake said he was so nervous his teeth was chattering. But he came home knackered and buzzing. He got to meet all the players and speak to them.

"Peter Crouch was behind him, who’s he met a few times already through watching Southampton. John Terry is certainly one of his biggest heroes now too.

"We all spotted him on television and were so proud."
